'La Comédie Humaine: 08 - Scènes de la vie de province tome 4' Summary
Doué du génie de l'observation, Balzac a créé des types humains saisissants de vérité. Certains de ses personnages sont tellement vivants qu'ils sont devenus des archétypes, tels Rastignac, le jeune provincial ambitieux, Grandet, l'avare tyran domestique, ou le père Goriot, icône de la paternité. Il accorde une place importante aux financiers et aux notaires, mais aussi au personnage de Vautrin, le hors-la-loi aux identités multiples. Son œuvre compte une importante proportion de courtisanes et de grisettes, à côté de femmes admirables et angéliques. L'importance qu'il donne à celles-ci et à leur psychologie lui a valu très tôt un lectorat féminin enthousiaste.
En dépit de l'opposition de l'Église, cette œuvre devient très vite un phénomène d'imprimerie et obtient un immense retentissement en France et en Europe, influençant profondément le genre du roman. Traduite en de nombreuses langues, elle est encore rééditée aujourd'hui et a souvent fait l'objet d'adaptations au cinéma et à la télévision.
