Alfred Austin

Alfred Austin (30 May 1835 – 2 June 1913) was an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1896, after an interval following the death of Tennyson, when the other candidates had either caused controversy or refused the honour.

Austin was born in Headingley, near Leeds, England, to a well-off family. He was educated at Stonyhurst College and St Mary's College, Oscott. After graduating from Oscott, Austin worked as a barrister for a few years, but he soon gave up law to pursue a career in writing.

Austin's early poems were published in various magazines and newspapers. His first book of poetry, The Season, was published in 1861. Austin's poetry was popular with Victorian audiences, and he was known for his patriotic verse. He was also a prolific writer of prose, and he wrote essays, biographies, and novels.

In 1896, Austin was appointed Poet Laureate, following an interval after the death of Tennyson. Austin's appointment was controversial, as many critics felt that he was not a worthy successor to Tennyson. Austin's poetry was seen as being too conventional and lacking in originality. He was also criticized for his political views, which were seen as being too conservative.

Austin served as Poet Laureate for 17 years. He resigned from the position in 1913, shortly before his death. Austin's poetry is now largely forgotten, but he is still remembered as a controversial figure in British literary history.

Austin's Principles

Austin was a conservative poet, and his poetry often reflected his political views. He was a supporter of the British Empire, and he wrote many poems in praise of the British military. He was also a critic of socialism and other radical movements.

Austin's poetry was also influenced by his religious beliefs. He was a devout Catholic, and his poetry often explored themes of faith and spirituality.
