Dora Sigerson Shorter
Dora Maria Sigerson Shorter (16 August 1866 – 6 January 1918) was an Irish poet and sculptor, who after her marriage in 1895 wrote under the name Dora Sigerson Shorter. She was born in County Mayo, Ireland, to a family of poets and artists. Her father, George Sigerson, was a well-known poet and folklorist, and her mother, Frances Tyndall Sigerson, was a painter and illustrator.
Shorter began writing poetry at a young age, and her first poems were published in the 1880s. She quickly became one of the most popular poets in Ireland, and her work was praised for its beauty, passion, and lyricism. She was also a gifted sculptor, and her works were exhibited in galleries throughout Ireland and England.
In 1895, Shorter married Clement Shorter, a journalist and editor. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter. Shorter continued to write poetry after her marriage, but she also began to write short stories and novels. Her most famous novel, The Flying Years, was published in 1901.Shorter died in 1918 at the age of 51. She is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
