Henry Ossian Flipper was born into slavery in Georgia in 1856. After the Civil War, he attended several schools and showed a great aptitude for knowledge. In 1873, he was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was the first African American to graduate from West Point, earning his place in history.
