Commonitory of Saint Vincent Lerins
'Commonitory of Saint Vincent Lerins' Summary
Vincent of Lérins begins the Commonitory by stating that the true Christian faith is that which has been believed by the Church since its foundation. He then goes on to argue that this faith is not static, but rather develops and grows over time, as the Church gains a deeper understanding of the Scriptures and the teachings of the apostles. However, Vincent emphasizes that this development must be organic and in accordance with the tradition of the Church. He warns against the dangers of heresy, which he defines as any teaching that departs from the faith of the Church. Vincent argues that heretics are often motivated by pride and ambition, and that they seek to impose their own ideas on the Church. He urges Christians to be vigilant against heresy, and to hold fast to the true faith that has been handed down to them by the apostles.Book Details
