Finland and the Tsars, 1809-1899
'Finland and the Tsars, 1809-1899' Summary
Finland and the Tsars, 1809-1899 by Joseph R. Fisher examines the historical relationship between Finland and Russia during the 19th century. The book covers the period of autonomy that Finland enjoyed under Russian rule, as well as the growing tensions that led to the eventual collapse of Russo-Finnish cooperation and Finland's declaration of independence in 1917. Fisher argues that the long-standing arrangements and understandings between Finland and the Tsars had served both parties well for the better part of a century, but that Nicholas II's attempts to Russify Finland ultimately led to the breakdown of this relationship. The book also explores the impact of the Winter War and Finland's politics and diplomatic efforts during the Cold War on the development of Europe in the 20th century.Book Details
