From the Deep Woods to Civilization: Chapters in the Autobiography of an Indian
'From the Deep Woods to Civilization: Chapters in the Autobiography of an Indian' Summary
Charles Eastman, born Ohiyesa, was the son of a Santee Sioux father and a Scottish mother. He was raised in the traditional ways of his people, but at the age of fifteen, he was sent to a boarding school for Native American children. There, he struggled to reconcile his traditional upbringing with the expectations of white society. After graduating from Dartmouth College and medical school, Eastman returned to his people and worked as a doctor on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He also became involved in politics and social activism, fighting for the rights of Native Americans. Eastman's autobiography is a powerful and moving account of the challenges and triumphs of a man who lived between two worlds.Book Details
