The Odyssey, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer, is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems, the other being the Iliad. It is, together with the Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature and the foundational work of ancient Greek literature. A sequel to the Iliad, it narrates the ten-year journey home of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy.

Book 4 of the Odyssey tells how Odysseus' son Telemachus, accompanied by the goddess Athena disguised as an old man named Mentor, travels to Sparta to seek news of his father. He is welcomed into the home of Menelaus and Helen, who recount their own adventures during the Trojan War and after. Telemachus learns that his father is still alive, but is being held captive by the nymph Calypso on the island of Ogygia.Book Details
