by Marian Vayreda

Punyalada is a Catalan novel by Marian Vayreda set in the mid-19th century in the mountainous region of Alta Garrotxa. It tells the story of Albert, a modest rural heir who finds himself embroiled in a bloody conflict with a band of bandits led by the malicious Ibo. The conflict is sparked by Ibo's kidnapping of Coralí, Albert's fiancée. As Albert and his allies pursue the bandits through the challenging terrain, the protagonist experiences a descent into despair and mental anguish, reflecting the ferocity of both the landscape and the society he inhabits. The novel is narrated in the first person by Albert himself, in the form of a memoir he shares with the author shortly before his death.
