Visionary

Visionary

by Emily Bronte

The "Visionary" is a poem attributed to Emily Brontë, though it is actually a combination of verses written by both Emily and her sister, Charlotte. The poem was originally part of a larger collection of Emily's poems, centered around the fictional Gondal kingdom. When Emily allowed some of her work to be published, she removed all references to Gondal. However, after her death, her sister Charlotte included an expanded version of the poem in a new edition of the Brontë sisters' collected works. This expanded version includes 8 lines added by Charlotte, which contribute to the poem's positive ending and potentially change the interpretation of the central figure, shifting it from a Gondal character to a representation of Emily herself. This editing process, while contributing to the poem's eventual publication, also highlights a critical discussion about the potential alterations of Emily's original work by Charlotte.
