Bourgeois Gentleman

Bourgeois Gentleman

by Moliere

Molière's *The Bourgeois Gentleman* is a comedic satire of social climbing and the pursuit of status in 17th-century France. The play centers on Monsieur Jourdain, a wealthy but unrefined bourgeois who desperately desires to be considered a true gentleman. He embarks on a series of ludicrous attempts to learn the arts and manners of the aristocracy, much to the amusement and bewilderment of those around him. The play exposes the absurdity of social pretense and the inherent flaws of both the aspiring middle class and the haughty nobility. Through witty dialogue and farcical situations, Molière highlights the hypocrisy of social structures and the ridiculousness of blindly following societal norms.
