Hero and Leander
'Hero and Leander' Summary
Hero and Leander is a narrative poem by Christopher Marlowe, begun in 1593 and left unfinished at his death in 1593. It was completed by George Chapman in 1598. The poem tells the story of the legendary lovers Hero and Leander, who are separated by the Hellespont. Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite, lives on the shore of Sestos, while Leander lives on the opposite shore of Abydos. Every night, Leander swims across the Hellespont to be with Hero. However, one night, Leander is drowned in a storm, and Hero throws herself into the sea and dies. The poem is a celebration of love and beauty, but it also explores the themes of death and loss. Marlowe's unfinished poem is a powerful and moving work of art, and it is considered one of the greatest poems of the Elizabethan era.Book Details
