Lure of the Labrador Wild
'Lure of the Labrador Wild' Summary
In 1903, adventurer Leonidas Hubbard, journalist Dillon Wallace, and Indian guide George Elson embarked on an ambitious expedition to canoe the Naskaupi River and Lake Michikamau in Labrador, and the George River in Quebec. However, the expedition was plagued by misfortunes from the start. They mistakenly followed the shallow Susan Brook instead of the Naskaupi River, leading to arduous portages and dwindling food supplies. On September 15th, at Windbound Lake, with their supplies almost depleted, they decided to turn back. On October 18th, Wallace and Elson went in search of a cached store of flour, leaving Hubbard behind in their tent. Tragically, Hubbard died of exhaustion and starvation that same day or the next. Meanwhile, Wallace became lost in a snowstorm, while Elson, after a week of grueling bushwhacking and crafting a raft to cross swollen rivers, managed to reach the nearest occupied cabin. A search party eventually found Wallace alive on October 30th, 1903.Book Details
