Marthas Kinder

Marthas Kinder

by Bertha von Suttner

In "Marthas Kinder," Bertha von Suttner continues the story begun in her groundbreaking anti-war novel, "Lay Down Your Arms." Baroness Martha Tilling, the widow of the slain Friedrich Tilling, dedicates her life to carrying on his legacy of working for disarmament and the establishment of international arbitration courts to prevent future wars. She instills these values in her children, especially her son Rudolf. Rudolf embraces his father's cause but seeks to expand upon it by linking the cause of peace with social justice. Along the way, he faces daunting political challenges. The novel also explores the theme of women's emancipation through the character of Martha's daughter, Sylvia. Despite the noble aspirations of Martha and Friedrich for their children, life's unexpected turns challenge their plans, but their dreams ultimately shine through.
