La obra narra los acontecimientos de la Primera Guerra Mundial a través de las vidas de dos familias provenientes del mismo linaje, los Madariaga. Tras la muerte de Julio Madariaga en Argentina, sus hijas Luisa y Elena regresan a Europa con sus respectivos esposos, Marcelo Desnoyers y Karl von Hartrott. El protagonista es Julio Desnoyers, hijo de Luisa y Marcelo, que lleva una vida disipada y licenciosa en París. Sin embargo, el estallido de la guerra lo lleva a alistarse en el ejército francés, donde experimenta una profunda transformación personal. Mientras tanto, su prima Elena y su esposo alemán se ven obligados a confrontar su lealtad dividida y los horrores de la guerra en el frente oriental.
