Tras la muerte de Julio Madariaga en Argentina, sus hijas Luisa y Elena regresan a Europa con sus respectivos esposos, Marcelo Desnoyers y Karl von Hartrott. El protagonista es Julio Desnoyers, hijo de Luisa y Marcelo, que lleva una vida disipada y licenciosa en París.
