Niels Holgersson's Wonderbare Reis

Niels Holgersson's Wonderbare Reis

by Selma Lagerlof

Niels Holgersson is a mischievous young boy who lives on a farm in Skåne, Sweden. He is unkind to the animals, often teasing and tormenting them. One day, Niels captures a mischievous gnome and refuses to release him. In retaliation, the gnome casts a spell on Niels, shrinking him to the size of a thumb. Fearing the wrath of the animals he once tormented, Niels flees and finds himself accompanying a flock of wild geese on their journey across Sweden. Through his travels, Niels experiences the beauty and wonder of the Swedish countryside, learns about the importance of respecting nature and animals, and forms unlikely friendships with the geese and other creatures he encounters.
