'Saint Benedict' Summary
Saint Benedict of Nursia was born in Nursia, Italy, around 480 AD. He was the son of a wealthy Roman family. At the age of 17, he left home to live as a hermit in the mountains of Subiaco, Italy. After three years, he was ordained a priest and founded a monastery at Subiaco. In 529, he moved to Monte Cassino, Italy, where he founded the monastery that became the center of the Benedictine Order. Benedict wrote the Rule of Saint Benedict, a set of rules for monastic life that became a model for other monastic orders. He died in 543 or 547 AD.Book Details
