Saint Benedict of Nursia (c. 480 – 543 or 547) was a Christian monk who lived in Italy. He is the founder of the Benedictine Order, a monastic order that spread throughout Europe. Benedict wrote the Rule of Saint Benedict, a set of rules for monastic life that became a model for other monastic orders. He also founded twelve communities for monks at Subiaco, Italy, before moving to Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy.
