Speeches Against Catilina
'Speeches Against Catilina' Summary
In 63 BC, Rome was on the verge of a devastating upheaval. Lucius Sergius Catiline, a disgruntled aristocrat, had assembled a band of discontented individuals, including debtors, exiles, and political malcontents, to overthrow the existing government. Cicero, a rising star in Roman politics and serving as consul, uncovered the plot and delivered a series of powerful speeches denouncing Catiline and his followers. The first speech, delivered in the Senate, warned of the dangers of the conspiracy and called for decisive action against the conspirators. The second and third speeches, addressed to the Roman people, exposed Catiline's motives and his treacherous plans. The final speech, delivered after Catiline's escape from Rome, celebrated the thwarting of the conspiracy and praised the courage and wisdom of the Roman citizenry. Cicero's masterful use of language, his eloquent arguments, and his understanding of the Roman psyche made these speeches a cornerstone of Roman political thought and a model of oratorical skill for centuries to come.Book Details
