The Sikh Religion: Its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors, Volume 2
'The Sikh Religion: Its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors, Volume 2' Summary
Volume 2 of The Sikh Religion by Max Arthur Macauliffe focuses on the lives and teachings of the third, fourth, and fifth gurus of Sikhism: Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, and Guru Arjun Dev.
Guru Amar Das was the third guru of Sikhism. He was a great social reformer who worked to abolish the caste system and promote the education of women. He also established a strong sense of community among Sikhs by building gurdwaras (Sikh temples) throughout the Punjab region.
Guru Ram Das was the fourth guru of Sikhism. He was a wise and compassionate leader who continued the work of his predecessor by building more gurdwaras and establishing a system of langar (free community kitchen). He also founded the city of Amritsar, which is now the holiest city of the Sikhs.
Guru Arjun Dev was the fifth guru of Sikhism. He was a great scholar and poet who compiled the Adi Granth, the sacred text of Sikhism. He was also the first Sikh martyr. He was tortured and executed by the Mughal emperor Jahangir for refusing to convert to Islam.
Volume 2 of The Sikh Religion is a fascinating and informative book that provides a wealth of insights into the lives and teachings of these three important gurus. It is well-written and easy to read, even for those who are not familiar with Sikhism.
