United States Constitution and Amendments
'United States Constitution and Amendments' Summary
The United States Constitution, often referred to as the supreme law of the land, is the foundation of the American governmental system. It establishes the framework for a federal republic, outlining the powers and responsibilities of the government, as well as the rights and freedoms guaranteed to its citizens. The first ten amendments, collectively known as the Bill of Rights, were added in 1791 to protect individual liberties. These amendments guarantee fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech, religion, and assembly; the right to bear arms; protection from unreasonable searches and seizures; and the right to due process of law. Subsequent amendments have addressed a range of issues, such as abolition of slavery, voting rights, and presidential terms. The Constitution is a living document that has been amended over time to reflect the evolving values and needs of the nation. It continues to be a source of debate and interpretation, shaping the political and social landscape of the United States.Book Details
