Who Burnt Columbia?
'Who Burnt Columbia?' Summary
At the end of the American Civil War, the businessmen of the former Confederacy brought a lawsuit against the Union. This book consists of selections from the depositions given during that lawsuit by Union Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and Oliver O. Howard. Their testimony focuses on the burning of Columbia, South Carolina, which remains a controversial event to this day. Some claim the fires were accidental, while others say they were a deliberate act of vengeance or set by retreating Confederate soldiers.Book Details
