Simplicissimus, ein unschuldiges Bauernkind, wird durch den Ausbruch des Dreißigjährigen Krieges aus seiner heilen Welt gerissen. Er wird Zeuge von Grausamkeiten und erlebt die zerstörerischen Folgen des Krieges. Auf der Suche nach Essen und Unterkunft gerät er in verschiedene Situationen: er wird Soldat, bettelt, wird zum Landsknecht und findet sogar zeitweilig Zuflucht in einem Kloster. Während seiner Reise durch das Kriegsgebiet trifft er auf verschiedene Charaktere, darunter Bettler, Soldaten, Kleriker und Adlige. Simplicissimus begegnet der Grausamkeit und der Verzweiflung des Krieges, aber auch der menschlichen Liebe, der Freundschaft und dem Wunsch nach Glück. Der Roman zeichnet ein erschreckendes Bild der Verzweiflung und des Chaos, das der Krieg hinterlässt, und zeigt gleichzeitig die Widerstandsfähigkeit und den Lebenswillen des Menschen. Durch die Geschichte von Simplicissimus beleuchtet Grimmelshausen die Korruption und die menschliche Schwäche, die im Krieg besonders deutlich werden.
