Antigone

Antigone

by Sophocles

Antigone is a play by Sophocles that tells the story of a young woman who defies the orders of her uncle, King Creon, and buries her brother, Polyneices, who was killed in battle against Creon's other nephew, Eteocles. Creon has forbidden the burial of Polyneices because he considers him a traitor, but Antigone believes that she has a duty to her brother and to the gods to give him a proper burial. Her defiance leads to her arrest and eventual execution, but her death also brings about Creon's downfall.
