Ball at Sceaux
'Ball at Sceaux' Summary
Émilie de Fontaine, a spoiled and willful young woman from a struggling noble family, is determined to marry a man of high social standing. Despite her father's hopes for a suitable match, Émilie has repeatedly turned away potential suitors, clinging to her unwavering requirement for a husband to be the son of a peer of France. This insistence, coupled with her volatile nature and a series of unfortunate events, creates a whirlwind of complications. At a grand ball hosted by the Countess de Sérisy, Émilie encounters the charming and wealthy Count de Vandenesse, a man who meets her exacting standards. However, their budding romance is interrupted by the arrival of a rival suitor, the Marquis d'Aiglemont, a man of dubious character who is determined to win Émilie's hand. The story unfolds through a series of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and cleverly orchestrated encounters, ultimately leading to a surprising and poignant resolution. Balzac's signature blend of social commentary and psychological insight paints a vivid picture of the post-revolutionary French aristocracy, exploring themes of love, ambition, social expectations, and the complexities of human relationships.Book Details
