El libro de Jonás comienza con la orden de Dios al profeta Jonás para que vaya a la ciudad de Nínive y predique su mensaje de arrepentimiento a la gente de esa ciudad, conocida por su maldad. Jonás, sin embargo, se rebela ante la orden de Dios y decide huir en dirección opuesta. Se embarca en un viaje marítimo, pero durante la travesía una gran tormenta azota el barco. Aterrorizados, los marineros echan suertes y descubren que Jonás es la causa de la tormenta. Para salvarse, lo arrojan al mar, donde es tragado por un gran pez. Dentro del vientre del pez, Jonás se arrepiente de su desobediencia y pide perdón a Dios. Dios escucha su oración y hace que el pez lo vomite en la costa. Dios le da una segunda oportunidad a Jonás, quien se dirige finalmente a Nínive y predica a la ciudad. Sorprendentemente, la gente de Nínive se arrepiente de su maldad y Dios decide perdonarlos.
