The story revolves around a young man named Jean, who is an orphan and a member of a traveling theater troupe. He is a sensitive and artistic young man, but he is also very poor and unattractive. One day, he meets a beautiful young woman named Camille, and he falls deeply in love with her. However, Camille is not interested in Jean, and she rejects his advances.
