City of the Sun
'City of the Sun' Summary
The book is a dialogue between a Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitallers and a Genoese Sea-captain. The Sea-captain has just returned from a voyage to a utopian city called the City of the Sun. He describes the city to the Grandmaster, and the two of them discuss the city's political, social, and religious systems. The City of the Sun is a perfect city, where all citizens are equal and live in harmony. The city is ruled by a philosopher-king who is elected by the people. The inhabitants of the city are free to pursue their own interests and live according to their own beliefs. Campanella's utopia is a reflection of his own political and religious beliefs. He was a Christian socialist who believed that a perfect society could be created on Earth. The City of the Sun is a blueprint for such a society.Book Details
