'Cleone. A Tragedy' Summary
Cleone is a tragedy in five acts by Robert Dodsley. It was first performed in 1758 and is based on the legend of Saint Genevieve. The play tells the story of Cleone, a young woman who is loved by two men, Varanes and Porphyrio. Varanes is a noble and virtuous man, while Porphyrio is a jealous and ambitious man. When Cleone chooses Varanes over Porphyrio, Porphyrio plots to get revenge. He falsely accuses Cleone of infidelity and has her banished from the kingdom. Cleone wanders the wilderness for years, living in poverty and despair. Eventually, she is reunited with Varanes and they are able to live happily ever after.Book Details
