En el Infierno, Dante Alighieri, guiado por el poeta romano Virgilio, se adentra en las profundidades del inframundo. Atraviesan los nueve círculos del infierno, cada uno dedicado a un pecado específico. En cada círculo, encuentran almas atormentadas por castigos que reflejan sus pecados en vida. Dante observa la agonía de los condenados: lujuriosos, glotones, avaros, iracundos, herejes, violentos, fraudulentos y traidores. Las almas de personajes históricos como Paolo y Francesca, Ugolino da Pisa y Ulises, se revelan a Dante, narrándole sus historias de pecado y sufrimiento.
