Doxie Dent
'Doxie Dent' Summary
Doxie Dent is a young woman who has grown up in London. Her family is from Lancashire, but she has never visited the county before. When her uncle, Jabez Clegg, invites her to stay with him, she decides to take him up on his offer. Jabez is a clog maker, and he lives in a small village called Beckside. Doxie is immediately struck by the difference between London and Beckside. The village is much quieter and slower-paced, and the people are much friendlier. Doxie quickly makes friends with the other villagers, but she also finds that she has to adjust to their ways of life. For example, she has to learn how to speak with a Lancashire accent, and she has to get used to the local customs. Doxie's arrival in Beckside also has a profound effect on Jabez. He is a traditionalist who believes that women should know their place. However, Doxie is a strong-willed and independent woman, and she challenges Jabez's beliefs. Jabez is forced to confront his own prejudices, and he eventually comes to accept Doxie for who she is.Book Details
