Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World
by Mark Twain
'Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World' Summary
In 1894, Mark Twain was practically bankrupt due to a failed investment. In an attempt to extricate himself from debt, he undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in the English language. Twain's journey took him to Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and Mauritius. Along the way, he observed the effects of imperialism on the people and cultures of these countries. He was particularly critical of the racism and exploitation that he witnessed. Twain's experiences are recounted in Following the Equator, which was published in 1897. The book is a mix of travelogue, social commentary, and humor. Twain's wit and wisdom are on full display in this book, making it a both entertaining and thought-provoking read.Book Details
