Four Hundred Years of Freethought, Part 1
'Four Hundred Years of Freethought, Part 1' Summary
Putnam begins his account with the Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake in 1600 for his heretical views. He then traces the development of freethought through the works of such thinkers as Spinoza, Descartes, Locke, Spencer, and Haeckel. Putnam also discusses the impact of freethought on literature, the arts, and politics, and on the development of new ideas about the nature of the universe and humanity's place in it.Book Details
