Brother Stephen, a talented illuminator, dreams of leaving the confines of the abbey and experiencing the world beyond its walls. However, his abbot assigns him the prestigious task of creating an illuminated hour book for the king's bride. Stephen is torn between his desire for freedom and his duty to his community. As he works on the intricate illuminations, he finds solace and guidance in Gabriel, a young color grinder with a radiant spirit.
