Hadrian The Seventh

Hadrian the Seventh

by Frederick

Hadrian the Seventh is a satirical novel by Frederick Rolfe, first published in 1904. It tells the story of George Arthur Rose, an English Catholic priest who is elected Pope and takes the name Hadrian VII. Hadrian's election is a shock to the world, as he is a relatively unknown figure and his election is seen as a sign of the decline of the Catholic Church. Hadrian's reign is marked by a series of reforms, including the abolition of celibacy and the introduction of women priests. However, his reforms are met with resistance from the Catholic hierarchy, and he is eventually forced to abdicate. Hadrian's story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of power and the importance of humility.
