'Μνημόσυνα: Άσματα' Summary
Μνημόσυνα is a collection of poems that commemorates events and individuals during the Ottoman occupation of mainland Greece. The poems depict the horrors and sacrifices endured by the Greek people, as well as the treachery of collaborators and the heroism of those who fought for their freedom. The collection is divided into four parts. The first part, "The Armatoloi," describes the role of these militia leaders in protecting the Greek people from Ottoman oppression. The second part, "The Klephts," celebrates the exploits of these brigands, who often fought alongside the armatoloi. The third part, "The Martyrs," commemorates those who died in the struggle for Greek independence. The fourth part, "The Heroes," celebrates the achievements of those who fought for and won Greek independence. Mνημόσυνα is a powerful and moving tribute to the Greek people and their struggle for freedom. Valaoritis's poems are full of passion and patriotism, and they offer a valuable glimpse into a critical period of Greek history.Book Details
