'Negro Problem' Summary
This collection of essays, edited by Booker T. Washington, is representative of what historians have characterized as "racial uplift ideology." These essays were a reaction to the gradual erosion of the African-American's civil rights across the United States that began during Reconstruction. The essays in this collection argue that African-Americans should focus on economic and educational advancement rather than on political and social equality. This ideology was popular among many African-Americans at the time, but it was also criticized by some for being too accommodationist.Book Details
