'Olivier Twist (NL)' Summary
Oliver Twist, een weesjongen, wordt geboren in een armhuis in Londen en verhuist naar een workhouse waar de kinderen uitgehongerd en slecht behandeld worden. Wanneer Oliver vraagt om meer eten, wordt hij weggejaagd en belandt hij op straat, waar hij wordt opgepakt door een bende dieven onder leiding van de sinister Fagin. Fagin traint Oliver om te stelen, maar Oliver probeert te ontsnappen aan deze criminele wereld en zoekt zijn toevlucht bij de vriendelijke mevrouw Maylie en haar adoptiedochter Rose. Het verhaal wordt gekenmerkt door Oliver's moeizame zoektocht naar liefde, respect en een beter leven in een wereld die gevuld is met armoede, misdaad en sociale onrechtvaardigheid. Dickens gebruikt Oliver's verhaal om de wantoestanden van het Victoriaanse tijdperk aan te klagen, met name de slechte omstandigheden in workhouses en de kinderarbeid.
