Oliver Twist is een klassiek verhaal dat de schrijnende omstandigheden van weeskinderen in het Victoriaanse Londen blootlegt. Oliver, een weesjongen, wordt in een workhouse geplaatst en moet vechten voor zijn overleving in een wereld vol armoede en criminaliteit. Hij komt terecht bij een bende dieven onder leiding van de sinister Fagin, die hem traint om te stelen. Ondanks de grimmige realiteit die Oliver omringt, houdt hij vast aan hoop en zijn verlangen naar een beter leven. Dickens bekritiseert in het verhaal de sociale ongelijkheid en de wreedheid van de maatschappij tegenover de meest kwetsbaren. De lezer wordt geconfronteerd met de harde realiteit van armoede en de corruptie die heerste in het Victoriaanse Engeland.
