Salammbô
'Salammbô' Summary
The story unfolds against the backdrop of the Mercenary Revolt, a brutal uprising against Carthage in the aftermath of the First Punic War. The mercenaries, once hired to fight Rome, are left unpaid and enraged. Their leader, Matho, becomes entangled in a passionate yet doomed affair with Salammbô, the daughter of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar. Salammbô, a symbol of Carthaginian power and tradition, is drawn to Matho's fierce spirit, but her love for him is forbidden. Driven by her desire for Matho and a desperate attempt to protect her people, Salammbô embarks on a dangerous quest to retrieve the sacred veil, the Zaimph, stolen by the rebels. This veil, imbued with religious significance and the essence of Carthage, represents the heart of her people's faith. The retrieval of the Zaimph becomes a symbolic battleground, where the lines between love, duty, and religious devotion blur. The story climaxes with a devastating defeat for the rebels, leaving a trail of destruction and bloodshed. Salammbô's personal sacrifices and Matho's defiant spirit ultimately become intertwined in a tragic narrative that explores the consequences of love, war, and the struggle between individual desires and the demands of fate.Book Details
