The story revolves around the arrival of a new schoolteacher, Mr. Linden, in the small New England town of Pattaquasset. Mr. Linden's progressive teaching methods and strong faith in God quickly capture the attention of the townspeople, including Miss Faith Derrick, the daughter of the house where he boards.
