Schloß Dürande is a novel set in France on the eve of the French Revolution. The story centers on Renald, a young man who witnesses his sister Gabriele's clandestine meeting with the son of the Count Dürande, Hippolyt. Fearing the worst, Renald sends Gabriele to live with their aunt in a convent. After Hippolyt departs for Paris, Renald attempts to bring Gabriele back, only to find her missing. Convinced she has run away with Hippolyt, Renald sets out for Paris to confront him and reclaim his sister. However, Hippolyt denies any knowledge of Gabriele's whereabouts.
