In the midst of Victorian London, Edward Royle, a prominent chemical manufacturer, finds himself embroiled in a web of mystery and deception. When his friend, the renowned railroad engineer Sir Digby Kemsley, summons him to his flat late one night, Royle arrives to find a gruesome scene. Kemsley has vanished, and a young woman lies dead. As Royle delves deeper into the investigation, he discovers that his own fiancée, Phrida Shand, was present at the flat during the murder. With suspicion cast upon her and his world turned upside down, Royle embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth and protect the woman he loves. Along the way, he encounters a cast of enigmatic characters, each with their own secrets and motives.
