This book contains the German translation by Rainer Maria Rilke of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Sonnets from the Portuguese". Browning wrote these sonnets for her husband, who then published them. In his translation, Rilke maintains the sonnet form but changes the rhyme scheme, creating a new melodic language. Other translations of these sonnets have been made by Hans Böhm and Marie Gothein.
