In 1914, he volunteered for the British Army and was sent to fight in France. He was killed in action at the Battle of Passchendaele in July 1917, at the age of 29. Ledwidge's poems are characterized by their simple language, their strong imagery, and their emotional intensity. He is often compared to other war poets of the era, such as Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, but his work is also unique in its celebration of nature and its expression of love for Ireland.
