Prince was born into slavery in Brackish Pond, Bermuda, in 1788. She was sold to a number of different masters throughout her childhood and adolescence, and she experienced physical and emotional abuse at the hands of many of them.
In 1828, Prince escaped from her master and fled to England. She was assisted by the Anti-Slavery Society, who helped her to publish her autobiography.
