Third Class In Indian Railways

Third Class in Indian Railways

by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

This book is a collection of essays written by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi about his experiences traveling third class on Indian Railways. Gandhi was a preeminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He was the pioneer of satyagraha—resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa or total nonviolence—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. In these essays, Gandhi vividly describes the conditions of third-class travel in India, which was often overcrowded, uncomfortable, and unsanitary. He also discusses the social and economic conditions of the people who traveled in third class, and he argues that the British colonial government was responsible for the poor conditions of Indian Railways. Gandhi's essays are a powerful indictment of the British colonial government and a call for social and economic justice in India.
