Two Brothers

Two Brothers

by Honoré de Balzac

In a small town in post-Napoleonic France, a wealthy landowner mistakenly believes that his daughter is not his legitimate offspring. He sends her away to be raised by his in-laws in Paris, where she grows up, marries, and has two sons. Meanwhile, her brother, who remains in the family home, grows up to be a feckless nonentity, vulnerable to manipulation. When the Paris branch of the family returns to the small town to claim their inheritance, tensions flare and long-buried secrets are revealed.
