The story unfolds on Christmas Eve in the Ukrainian village of Dykanka. The villagers are preparing for their holiday celebrations, but their plans are disrupted by a series of magical events. The Devil, seeking to disrupt the peace, tries to steal the Moon and cause chaos. Meanwhile, the blacksmith Vakula is desperate to win the hand of his beloved Oksana, who doubts his love and social status. After a series of misadventures, including a trip to Saint Petersburg to ask Tsarina for a pair of magical slippers, Vakula returns to Dykanka to find that his love for Oksana has been proven true.
