'Wahlverwandtschaften' Summary
In the novel "Elective Affinities" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the wealthy Baron Eduard lives with his wife Charlotte in a secluded castle. The former lovers have finally found each other in their second marriage. This idyll is disturbed when Eduard invites his friend, the captain, to the estate. Charlotte also summons her niece Ottilie to keep her company. Soon, Eduard feels drawn to Ottilie, and Charlotte to the captain. Goethe uses this constellation to explore the tensions between social conventions and individual desires.
