Volpone, or, The Fox
by Ben Jonson
'Volpone, or, The Fox' Summary
Volpone, a Venetian nobleman, pretends to be on his deathbed, hoping to trick three men, Voltore, Corbaccio, and Corvino, into believing they will inherit his vast fortune. These men, driven by greed, shower Volpone with lavish gifts and even disinherit their own families to gain his favor. However, Volpone is manipulating them all, with the help of his cunning servant Mosca. As the schemes unfold, the play exposes the ugliness of avarice and the lengths people will go to for wealth. Volpone's elaborate plan eventually unravels, leading to a series of comedic twists and turns that culminate in a satisfying exposure of the characters' true nature. In the end, Volpone's elaborate schemes are exposed, and he faces justice for his deceitful actions. The play is a scathing commentary on the vices of human nature, particularly the destructive power of greed and deceit.Book Details
