Adelphi: Or, The Brothers

Adelphi: or, The Brothers

by Terence

Adelphi, or The Brothers, is a Latin comedy by the Roman playwright Terence, adapted from the Greek play Adelphoi by Menander. Two brothers, Micio and Demea, have very different approaches to raising their sons. Micio is indulgent and permissive, while Demea is strict and authoritarian. Micio's son, Aeschinus, falls in love with a young woman named Pamphila, and Demea's son, Ctesipho, gets involved in a scheme to abduct her. The play explores the themes of family relationships, the conflict between indulgence and discipline, and the importance of moderation.
